PART 2 –
THE CHELTENHAM ANTE-POST SERVICE

We’ll start with two Guides that examine the pre-Xmas day races from GB and Ireland that have proved so important to finding Cheltenham winners over the last decade (including Gary’s definitive Guide to the Pertemps Hurdle Qualifiers).

Then, every day throughout February we’ll be taking a look at each of the 28 races set to be run at the Cheltenham Festival 2025 and giving each one a thorough write-up to find the best value bet(s) currently available.

Gavin will start with the big Grade 1 races that entries have already been made for, then move on to the supporting races as the entries are made throughout February before Gary takes a look at the handicaps, as the proposed runners are released, towards the end of the month.

Expect big winners like this one (from the 2024 Service)…

ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICE HURDLE

The Grade 2 Lyons Of Limerick Jaguar Land Rover Novice Hurdle is a decent Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle trial given that the 2015, 2017 and 2021 Albert Bartlett winners had all taken part in the race prior to winning at Cheltenham, while Fury Road (third by a neck in the 2020 Albert Bartlett) had won that trial back in 2019. This Season’s winner Loughlynn had looked a progressive horse prior to this win but has been pulled up since in a Grade 1 and has now been scratched from the race. The runner up at Limerick remains on course for this though and Gordon Elliott’s 7yo STELLAR STORY looks just the type to go well here.

A two time NH flat winner from 3 starts he beat Ile Atlantique and Caldwell Potter on his third start which is cracking form with the pair subsequently doing very well in Grade 1 company over hurdles and sitting prominently in the betting for the Baring Bingham Novice Hurdle. He won first time up over hurdles this season and then was done for pace against a couple of speedier types in a Grade 2 at Navan over 2m4f at the start of December. He was then second in that Limerick Grade 2 Hurdle before staying on late in 4th in the big 2m6f Grade 1 Novice at the Leopardstown Festival a couple of weeks ago. I think he’s crying out for this step up to 3 miles and the form of that NH flat race at Naas last February has worked out really well. He ticks all the boxes for Cheltenham and given the history of outsiders running well in this race I’m certainly not put off by his price. I like his chances a lot.

SELECTION: STELLAR STORY 1pt EW 33/1 NRNB

When was the last time you saw a Tipster that confident about a 33/1 winner at the Cheltenham Festival?

and coming less than 24 hours after this other strong piece of ante-post advice..

FESTIVAL PLATE

A keeping on 3rd in this race last year Ben Pauling’s Irish bred SHAKEM UP’ARRY has so much going for him that he just has to be the selection in his repeat attempt at the race. He followed that third with a fourth at the Aintree Festival over 3m1f where he weakened on the run to the line before undergoing wind surgery and having 6 1/2 months off the track. He was awful on his seasonal debut when pulling up in a class 3 handicap off 12-00 at Stratford but left that form well behind with a 6th of 19 in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury over 3m1f where he once again weakened in the closing stages of the race. Last time out he dropped back in trip and returned to Cheltenham for the Paddy Power Chase on New Years Day where topweight and short priced favourite Stage Star had given the handicap a lopsided look. When that one pulled up it left Shakem Up’Arry to take it up on the run to the last and stay on nicely up the hill to win by 7 1/2 lengths. In a race we used the trends to great effect to find the 20/1 winner last year it’s good to see our selection for this season tick all the same boxes (age, breeding, rating, form) and as a course and distance winner looks a great bet.
